Diving Deeper: The Varsity Jacket
Entrenched in American culture, the varsity jacket has become an essential menswear staple.
Due to the rise of media platforms, varsity jackets have become synonymous with high-school athletes. originally known as the Letterman Jacket, the style is rooted in Harvard University folklore.
In 1865 the Harvard baseball team sewed the English letter "H" onto their grey flannel uniform, thus creating an air of exclusivity and prominence. Worn as a badge of honour, similarly to soldiers showing off their medals.
Eventually bursting onto the streetwear scene in the 80's and 90's thanks to the influence of football and basketball, as well as hip hop groups such as Run-D.M.C and N.W.A. The Jacket was ushered into the new millennium thanks to streetwear giants such as Stussy, Nike and Bape.
With the current growth of luxury streetwear, the future interpretations of the varsity jacket looks exciting.
